August 2007 - Mission Beach, North Qld

Forgive me for taking so long to update the blog! Life has been a tad bit busy and I'm afraid I tend to shy away from the computer on the weekends and funnily enough everywhere I work they seem to frown upon using the work computer for personal use! Tut tut!!!! Haven't they heard of Facebook????????
I just cannot keep up with cows been thrown at me and pirates constantly fighting me and endless quizzes about my TV and movie watching skills. It is truly exhausting keeping up with the barrage of communication. Fun but exhausting. Actually it's also been abit of a benefit, keeping a watchful eye on the youngsters at work who are constantly on Facebook. They were a bit horrified at the thought of me being a part of it - and so they should be!!! he he he!

Well back to the travels. The last I wrote was about our trip to St George (not going back in a hurry). We stayed at home and saved a few pennies before heading up north to see some friends in Mission Beach.

Now I know I may start sounding like a whingeing Pom but I didn't really like Mission Beach either??????

The weather was not kind to us and for 5 days it rained pretty much the whole time. But the thing is, long stretches of beach with no waves just doesn't seem all that exciting??? We could see Dunk Island in fact we could have canoe-ed over to Dunk Island it's that close. But there is no reef on the other side of the island you do have to get on a boat and trek out quite far before being able to dive on the reef.

We took a drive up to Bingal beach and I would imagine that when the sun shines this would be a particularly beautiful spot. But note the warning sign on the beach! You can't swim there from November to May as that is stinger season (the very dangerous killing kind!), then all year round you need to have a watchful eye out for crocodiles. Not one word about sharks. Mmmmm I'm not sure, I wasn't that keen to venture into the water even though it was August!

We did have a fabulous day on Hinchinbrook Island. (The latest Jodie Foster movie was shot over on Hinchinbrook.) On the drive to the marina it bucketed down - but really really rained solidly for the full hours drive. We all laughed and laughed - could not believe our luck. But as soon as we boarded the boat to head to the island the sun came out and shone down on us all day! We had a delightful day exploring the island, relaxing and enjoying a beautiful meal and a great refreshing swim!

What I nearly forgot to mention were the rain forests! They will be worth going back to see and explore. I'm not sure if it's the holidays that I loved so much we had as kids (with the Laudins and MacKenzies in the Drakensberg and Eastern Transvaal) but I loved walking through the rain forest, stepping over little streams and all the fabulous sounds of the different birds and bugs! Plus this area of Qld is known for the Cassowary. A beautiful ostrich like bird. Apparently not that bright and extremely shy. We did manage a glimpse & a quick photo of one.

We had a great time with Russ and Terese (and their gorgeous babies, Joey and Bess) and perhaps next time we'll head more to the mountains or stay near the Tully river for a bit of white water fun???

This is young Bess who demanded most of our attention! She'd just jump up on our laps and put her paw out on the one arm waiting for the stroking and chatting to start! Poor Joey is the old man of the family and he could not get a show in. In fact he'd crack the shits and head off to his bed!
